Instructions for a Quilt Top or Finished Quilt
Fabric requirements for a Finished Quilt Top
Sashing and binding requires 2 yards of fabric. Use muslin or a coordinating fabric. Backing requires 3 yards. The original quilts were backed with muslin, but you can use a coordinating fabric. Our illustrations show a quilt top with matching blocks, but you can make a scrappy quilt if you prefer.
PLEASE NOTE: Backing supplied for Long Arm quilting, must be at least 4" wider and 4" longer than the top. At a minimum the backing should measure 52" wide x 88" long.
Sashing and Side Borders
Add sashing if you're planning to complete a quilt top. Sashing should be cut at 3 1/2" wide and will finish at 3 inches.
Sew sashing between three blocks to form one row.
Then add longer pieces between each row to form the top.
Top and Bottom Border
The top and bottom borders are a bit wider than the sashing. These borders should be cut at 6 1/2" wide and will finish at 6 inches.
The finished quilt top will measure 48" X 84" — the recommended size of the U.S. Sanitary Commission.
Quilting
Quilt the top using your preferred method - by hand or by machine. Use any design you like.
Binding
For a softer finish, bindings should be hand bound. You can machine sew the binding onto the front of the quilt, but the binding should be hand-sewn on the back.
